IPL Skin Treatment FAQs

After relying on creams and make-up for so long it is naturally going to take a bit of convincing that something as seemingly basic as flashing light onto your skin is going to clear up your longstanding issues.  However it has been scientifically proven to work on conditions such as Rosacea, age spots, sun damage, vascular or pigmented lesions, as well is evening out thin wrinkles and hopefully the review from other people you’ll find on the internet will help aleviate any doubts.

There are obviously other questions you might have and this page is designed to try and answer all the main ones for you:

1. Is IPL suitable for my skin conditions?

Good question and it’s an important one.  IPL skin treatment will not work on grey hair, red hair or light blonde hair and should actively be avoided if you have black skin as it can cause skin damage. When you buy the IPL Skin rejuvenation lamp it will come with a skin and hair type chart (be it white, beige, light brown, mid brown and dark brown) and body hair colours (dark blonde to black).  Each IPL device will be slightly different but they all have multiple light intensity settings that can be easily adjusted to allow you to expose your skin to just the right amount of light for your skin tone

2. Are IPL Skin Care Lamps Safe to use?

Yes they are (unless, as mentions above, you have black skin) – the IPL method only uses low energy pulsed light of specific wavelengths that can be safely and effectively used without supervision in your own home. These wavelengths of light are carefully filtered so no UVA or UVB and very little UV light are exposed to your skin so there is no risk of anything like cancer.

There are no side-effectives and you can confidently go out in public and do what you’d normally do the same day you treat yourself.

3. OK, IPL is safe but does it hurt?

If you use the recommended light intensity for your skin and follow the instructions provided (which are very simple) then there is no reason why you should feel any pain or discomfort. If you start feeling warmth or prickling then gradually reduce the intensity till it fades.

4. What happens if I use IPL more often – will I see quicker results?

No – using your IPL more often than recommended will not speed up results as your body will need time to recover from treatment. You should avoid treating the same area multiple times in one session since this will not improve efficacy – it only increases the risk of skin irritations.

 5. Can men use IPL Skin Rejuvenation Lamps too?

Yes they can, IPL can be used by both men and women with equally effective results.

6. How many IPL treatments are required before I see results?

This will naturally depend on the complexity, severity and types of skin condition that you are looking to treat. The normal recommended treatment sessions are a series of 8 to 12 weekly treatment sessions which should provide gradual improvement with very low risk.

Following this schedule you should visibly recognise improvements in within the first month which will continue through the 2nd month until after completing 3 months of regular treatment you should have fantastic results. If necessary you can undertake subsequent treatments after waiting 3 months from the end of your last session.

7. What is the process for a typical IPL skin treatment?

There are 4 basic steps that you should  ideally follow.

i. Apply a pre-treatment gel to the area you are focussing on
ii. Put on safety glasses to protect your eyes during treatment if you have them
iii. Use the IPL lamp on the area use wish to treat
iv. Rub post-treatment cream to moisturise and protect the skin after use.
